Five-Minute Meditation and Breathing to Ease Pregnancy Anxiety and Sleep Better

Hormonal shifts and worries about the pregnancy leave many mothers restless. Five minutes of slow breathing and mindfulness a day lowers heart rate, calms the nervous system and improves sleep.

1. Why pregnancy can feel anxious

Rising estrogen and progesterone, weekly body changes and questions about the baby's health leave many mothers restless or sleepless at times. Mild, passing anxiety is normal. If it lasts more than two weeks or affects eating, sleeping or daily life, talk to your obstetric provider.

2. A 4-6 breathing exercise in five minutes

  1. Sit comfortably with a straight back, one hand on your belly and relaxed shoulders.
  2. Inhale through the nose for a count of 4, letting the belly rise gently.
  3. Exhale slowly through the mouth for a count of 6, as if blowing out a candle.
  4. Repeat for five minutes. If you feel dizzy, return to natural breathing and rest.

3. Short mindfulness practice

Rest your attention on your breath or on the baby's movements. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back without self-criticism. Practising before bed helps the body shift into rest mode.

4. Safety notes

  • After week 20, avoid lying flat on your back for long; prefer sitting propped up or lying on your left side.
  • Never hold your breath or breathe too deeply.
  • Relaxing music or guided meditations in the Momlingo music section can make it easier to focus.
