Facts & myths about sunscreen during pregnancy.

Many expectant mothers worry about whether using sunscreen is safe. This article helps distinguish facts from common myths.

During pregnancy, a mother’s skin becomes more sensitive and prone to dark spots due to hormonal changes and UV exposure. Sunscreen is an important “shield,” but there are many concerns and misconceptions that can confuse expectant mothers. Let’s uncover the facts for safe and effective sun protection.

Not all sunscreens are safe

Fact: Not every sunscreen is suitable during pregnancy. Chemical sunscreens may contain oxybenzone or avobenzone, which can raise concerns. Mothers should prioritize mineral (physical) sunscreens with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which are safe and less likely to cause irritation.

Misconception: No need for sunscreen indoors
Fact: UVA rays can pass through windows, causing aging and pigmentation. Mothers should still use sunscreen if exposed to natural light indoors for extended periods.

Misconception: Sunscreen causes clogged pores and breakouts

Fact: Some products containing oils or fragrances can clog pores. Choosing non-comedogenic, gentle, fragrance-free sunscreens keeps skin clear, comfortable, and healthy.

Misconception: Higher SPF is always better

Fact: SPF 30–50 is sufficient for daily protection. What matters more is applying the right amount and reapplying every 2–3 hours during outdoor activities.
Safe sunscreen is a trusted companion for expectant mothers throughout pregnancy. Choosing the right type and using it correctly helps protect skin from pigmentation, maintain a fresh and healthy appearance, and ensures safety for both mother and baby.
