Late Pregnancy Signs You Should Go to the Hospital Now: Waters Breaking, Bleeding, Reduced Movement

Waters breaking, heavy bleeding, reduced fetal movement or rapid contractions mean you should go to hospital immediately. Know how to spot them and prepare ahead.

1. Signs you should go to hospital now

  • Waters breaking: clear or pinkish fluid leaking steadily or in gushes that you cannot control. Note the time and colour. Green or brown fluid needs immediate care.
  • Heavy bleeding: bright red blood soaking a pad, with or without pain.
  • Reduced movement: fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours while resting on your side, or the baby is not moving as usual.
  • Rapid contractions: 5 minutes apart or closer, lasting about a minute for at least an hour, or any regular contractions before week 37.
  • Severe headache, blurred vision, upper abdominal pain: possible severe preeclampsia.

2. On the way

  • Lie on your left side while travelling if possible and use a clean pad to monitor fluid.
  • Do not douche, and do not take medicine to stop contractions unless prescribed.
  • Bring your prenatal record, ID, insurance card and hospital bag.

3. Prepare ahead

Save your doctor's number, know the route and travel time to the hospital and agree who will take you. When in doubt, get checked rather than wait.
